No big surprises on an individual level. Most prominent to me is Ray's 17.71 PER, he usually is in the lower 20's. I would argue that his excellent defense has made up for this lower PER, but it does point to the fact that Ray is older, and everything that implies for shooting guards. KG and Pierce are right where you'd expect, as is mostly everyone else. One thing Hollinger's PER can't do is give us a good idea as to how well defensively these guys have been playing, and almost across the board defense has been a positive aspect.

This is why PER is messed up: Rondo is having a fantastic year, shooting 53% from the field (second-best among starting guards in the league), pulling down four boards (top six amongst PGs), and racking up an outstanding 3/1 assist to turnover ratio (top 12 in the league). Not to mention being one of the five (three?) best defensive PG's in the game. And yet, according to PER, he is a below-average player. Does that seem right to you?

I'd say 13.84 is just about average; I think "average" is more like 14 than the 15 Hollinger says, that puts you usually around the top 150 players in the league (or supposed starters). Rondo's PER hardly indicates his defensive prowness, like you say, but it gives a good approximation of his skill. Rondo is my favorite player on the team, I can see him being as good as Tony Parker, but right now he is not nearly at that level.
